Appraisals
A jewelry appraisal can be among the most important
documents you will ever acquire.
Appraisals and reports are used by insurance companies,
banks, governmental agencies and the courts, and must meet
certain requirements for each purpose. You need a recognized
professional who can provide accurate information and
reliable documentation of the quality and value of your
jewelry.
An accurate gemological identification and evaluation of
your jewelry is the reason you turn to an appraiser. When
you work with an American Gem Society Certified Gemologist
Appraiser, you are dealing with a professional jeweler
possessing the highest credentials.
A Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA) is recognized
throughout the jewelry industry as an appraisal authority.
The title of CGA is the highest awarded by the American Gem
Society. It is bestowed upon only those retail jewelers who
comply with the American Gem Society Appraisal Standards and
have proven expertise and professionalism.
At Trein's, we have an American Gem Society Certified
Gemologist Appraiser on staff. Mrs. Linda Brantley, holds a
CGA title and works in Trein's American Gem Society
Accredited Laboratory, which is required of all AGS, CGA's.
Mrs. Brantley has been a CGA for 10 years.
There are many reasons to have an appraisal done but the
two most common appraisals that we provide are:
- Insurance: this appraisal should give a ample
information of the item along with the value required to
replace, in the event of a loss.
- Fair market value: the definition of this type of
appraisal is the price at which the property would change
hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller,
neither being under any compulsion to buy or sell, and
both having reasonable knowledge of relevant facts.
Every item that has a value of $250 or more is
accompanied by a Sales Report, which mirrors an appraisal
and can be used for insurance purposes.
For jewelry that customers have not purchased at
Trein's, we are happy to do an appraisal for any and all of
your items. The fee for an appraisal is based on the time it
takes. You are provided with a professional appraisal
accompanied by photographs and a detailed description that
will assure replacement of like items in the unfortunate
event of a loss.
Appraisal procedure:
- The item is first cleaned thoroughly by
ultrasonic, steam and or by hand.
- Prongs, clasps and gemstones are checked for
condition.
- Identification of stones, karat gold is determined
and gram weights of the piece are determined.
- Measurements are made of gemstones, weights are
calculated and grading is calculated.
- Each piece is photographed by digital camera.
- Each item is carefully wiped off and put in
separate bags.
- The appraisal is entered on a program designed for
jewelry and values are calculated.
If repairs are needed, the recommendation is made to the
customer and proceeded on, if the customer so desires. The
customer is notified that the appraisal is done and the
items are kept in the vault until the customer picks them
up.
Work sheets are filed and the appraisals are saved on
the computer to facilitate future appraisal updates.
On an update, the calculations are all done, so the cost
of updating is significantly less.
It is recommended that appraisals be done at least every
three years.
